personally, i think the “hymn sandwiches” get a bum wrap! (not sure if that is the correct spelling for bum or wrap when used in this situation….oh well)
i think a “hymn sandwich” could be very nice. to me a bad “hymn sandwich” is when only the old (oops….I mean traditional) songs are used and there are so many of them! BORING!

I laughed right out loud when you said “oops, I mean traditional” ! I think that was the point of the cartoon was that most of the hymns are boring. As I read your response though, I had to wonder if it is the hymns that are boring or is the way they are written that is boring? The words truly have meaning but a lot of times, the music is lame. Or…is it possible that we just don’t sing them with a lot of feeling?
Did you ever notice that in HOS, sometimes it seems like there are only about 7-10 tunes used but there are almost 400 hymns. I think that says a lot.
I agree that a good mix of contemporary and traditional is needed.

i think it is definitely the music. a lot of substance in the lyrics but when put to poor music or when they are played poorly it can become so dreadful.
though, i think a lot of the lyrics should just be poems and that’s it!

Now that would be changing the order of service wouldn’t it? WE CAN’T DO THAT!!!
In the last year or so, I have taken several hymns and re-arranged them into a different style. Now if you can just imagine “O My People Saith The Spirit” in a bluegrass style or “The Old Old Path” in a jazz/blues combination.
Nothing like a little free-thinking huh?

community of christ minister dave heinze will do like 7-10 variations on “The old old path” consecutively. i have heard him do this back in the day at the former Seattle Stake Reunion and at World Conference in the Temple Sanctuary during a worship service. he would do it bluegrass, rock, pop, blues, etc. very neat! never new such a dull song could sound so cool!
